about

Recorded October 2021 during my time at the Sound Dug Through artist work week at Bidston Observatory Artistic research Centre, Wirral. This piece uses sounds recorded in and around the Observatory as well as improvised synth and guitar lines and is mixed using a convolution reverb which itself was created by using a clap impulse response recorded on the datum point in the sub basement.
It is from this point that the original weather and seismic measurement equipment was calibrated when the the building was a working observatory.
By using reverb modelled on the space in which the piece was written and recorded and by incorporating field recordings from both outside and inside the building it is possible to conceptualise this piece of music as folding places and times in and on top of one another. The Datum point can be seen as both a point of emanation and as end point of sound receding.
In this way I hope to begin to engage with the Observatory as a focal point of colonial navigational information and to explore what it might mean to reframe and to reappropriate this old building using its inner and outer spaces as vectors through which to begin to engage with decolonial practices.

All money from the purchase of this track will be used to buy esims for those on the ground in Gaza. This includes purchases made before I posted this note.
